On her 60th birthday, Julia Day, played by Julia Ormond, wakes up alone after 35 years of marriage to Ted, who has left her. Determined to have a good day, she leaves her home in Devon for London to celebrate with her children but faces disappointment as her son Leo forgets, her daughter Della is stranded abroad, and her eldest child Patrick is overwhelmed with work and personal issues while battling feelings for a colleague. Feeling adrift and at a low ebb, Julia meets a young man named Benjamin, portrayed by Ben Barnes, in a museum and they begin a whirlwind romance. However, when she introduces Benjamin to her children, they become suspicious of his motives and start plotting to remove him from her life.
